Objectives

The objective of the uDig project was to create an open-source desktop GIS application to make viewing, editing, and printing data from CGDI and local data sources simple for ordinary computer users. uDig met these ambitious development goals by integrating the best parts of two existing open-source Java libraries - the GeoTools data access library and the Eclipse RCP framework.

The uDig project creates an interactive WFS-T client application capable of editing WFS data directly online with a desktop interface. The uDig application allows users to view and edit local files and database data integrated on the fly with CGDI data from WFS and WMS servers. The uDig project prototyped on-the-fly discovery and viewing of CGDI services using the Web Registry Service standard.
