Initial Notes:

  • User is an experienced JUMP developer using Eclipse.
  • The user has many java installs.
  • User is a geotools (and is thus JAI aware)

Task 1: Installation (20 min)

Tried JRE installer

  • "Oh !@#$ did not specify path" (user wanted all there jre in the same C:\java\ directory as there jsdk installs
  • could not figure out difference between JAI_1.1.2 and JAI_1.1.2_01 decided to go with the most recent.

JAI Installation

  • distresed that JAI_1.1.2 exe did not ask for interaction, concerned it did not work, user expcted a choice between the three installed JREs.
  • tried download from SUN again, ended up having to restart firefox (probably did not shut it down during JRE install)
  • uninstall JRE and tried again, still no difference
  • check in regedit
  • reboot time (machine had not been rebooted in 4 days)

Task 1: Installation after Reboot (5 min)

Installation

    • JRE installed fine
    • JAI_1.1.2_01 installed fine
    • Image IO installed correctly

RCP

    • tried to find an Eclipse to unzip the RPC into (was stopped before he could mess things up)
    • Uninstalled into the Program Files path, worried about the old 0.3 install directions that mentioned this was fatal (it is fixed in 0.4)

UDIG

    • unziped into Program Files/udig/eclipse
    • Paused when asked to overwrite config.ini

Task 2: Getting Started (15 min)

  • Went looking for the tutorial
    • started at the http://udig.refractions.net website
    • "Where are the docs?"
    • Went back to the wiki Download page, clicked on Quickstart "am I blind or ..."
    • Gave up (told to check the application)
  • Found the tutorial "Ah ..."
    • Found Help menu right away, experienced eclispe user did not balk at the book entries went straight to the first page of basic tutorial
  • Read the first page
    • Next button does not work (Back did not either) (told there were browser back and forward buttons)

A simple project

  • User would read the whole page and then switch to udig (user was in full screen mode)
  • Created project in My Documents/project1
    • typed .udig suffix "do I need to do this?"
    • erased suffix to see what would happen
  • Got stuck adding a layer
    • Relized he had missed the New Map button (it was a bit of text between large screen snapshots)
    • Went through styling with out a blink, or looking at the docs
  • Went right into tools (ignoring the tutorial)
    • Loved the zoom tool
    • "Can I zoom out" - reminded that there is a tutorial - "Oh yeah right"
    • Had to hunt for "zoom extent" (display all data did not register as what he was looking for)

Views and Editors

  • skipped (this was an eclipse user)
  • Looked for layers in the Project Explorer, did not even see the Layers on the right side of the screen.

Import a shapefile

  • Did not hesitate on memory mapped
  • loaded up a large shapefile
  • Made a new Map ... Error
  • performed a Count (it worked the large shapefile had one feature!)

Tools

  • Pan
    • stutter bug made this a useless, user got totally lost within 3 seconds of using the tool! User moved, the lake bounced back, was moved away again, bounced back, moved away, bounced back, user said "What" screen updated somewhere completly different (lol - I am sorry but it was funny)
    • "Tools needs pictures"
  • Selection
    • Tried to click on a lake, nothing happened
    • Assumed tool was not picked, went back to the title bar and read the tooltip ("selection rectangle")
    • Tried drawing a rectangle, nothing happened
    • Muse be selected .. lets edit
  • Edit
    • Does not work, selection must be broken
