User-friendly Desktop Internet GIS (uDig) is an open source spatial data viewer/editor, with special emphasis on the OpenGIS standards for internet GIS, the Web Map Server and Web Feature Server standards. uDig provides a common Java platform for building spatial applications with open source components.

We have been toiling long on hard and hard to make the following changes to the uDig 1.1.x branch:

  • Improved Rendering performance for large shapefiles
  • Reduced the memory footprint used when viewing large shapefiles
  • Feedback dialog is opened when indexing shapefiles occurs.
  • A tips dialog and a bunch of usage tips to go with it has been added
  • Workflow improvements and bug fixes have been applied to the save/export functionality
  • The preferences in the preference dialog have be organized and a number of preferences have been added. (More to come)
  • For added convenience buttons for toggling the thematic legend and the scalebar have been added to the Layer Menu
  • When selecting geometries that overlap or cover each other each consecutive click will select a different geometry at that point.
  • Keyboard shortcuts for common tasks have been finally connected: Save, Delete, Copy, Paste, Previous location, Zoom, Pan, etc...
  • Catalog is now cleaned up on exit so the MemoryDatastore will not longer linger after it is needed.
  • JTS 1.7 has been integrated for developers who are interested.
  • The distance tool is not quite as insane... It now realizes centimeters may not be necessary when measuring Brazil.
  • Not mentioned are the numerous fixes to the Edit tools. Please try them out and start reporting bugs for use.

Thank you all for your support and enjoy the latest installment. We are getting quite close to a final release now. The Table View has to be fixed up a bit, Richard will be getting OSSIM integrated so we have better(excellent) Raster support and the last big editing bugs need to be closed.
