Basic architecture for a spatial application

Chaining WFS and WMS services
Example of a hypothetical web application

A complex web application can leverage the already existing services provided by the WFS and WMS. For example, an oil company may want a web application to allow easy access to well information. The company store its oil well information in a spatial database and use a WFS interface to update and retreive the location of the wells and a WMS to draw the maps. The auxiliary data (like geologic studies, environmental impact studies, and cost estimates) maybe accessed using another web service.

More complex example
Example of a hypothetical web application using multiple servers

A web application can access services that are located on different physical location and developed by different companies.
